I'm part of an organization that has had many members over the years and I'm looking for a way to set up a website that will allow all members to create profiles, upload photos, etc. and immediately link up with one another. Something similar to social networking websites but this one allows everyone to automatically connect with one another since it will be limited to members of the organization.
Does anyone know of any open source social networking software? (something like facebook.com)?

Reply:I'm not aware of anything that is created for redistribution. The size and complexity of such a site would suggest that finding a canned package to do this is unlikely. We're talking a lot of resources to run a package like that in it's purest form. If you wanted to build a framework and offer up cookie cutter pages, you could do that rather easily with Apache, MySQL and PHP pages.

On your homepage there's a sidebar that says "Applications" click "More" at the bottom and you'll see Notes and Posted items. Click one of them. On the note app, you'll see "post a new note" on a button in the upper right. On the posted items app you'll see "Post a link" with a box below it with http://. type your web site in here.

It depends on who you are trying to hide it from. If you are trying to hide pictures or other information in your profile from anyone who you have not accepted as a friend or anyone who is not in your network, click the link at the top righthand corner of the page that says 'privacy.' Then click 'profile,' and you will be able to choose which components of your profile are visible to others.

There is no facebook.co.uk, you have to use the .com one. Sometimes Facebook is slow, it's just one of those things. I find it's slower at this time of day than it is at others.

I'm a member. I think it's an alright way to keep in touch with people, and it's better than myspace because it isn't crowded with annoying middle schoolers and no one posts stupid chain letters or anything and you can't customize your page to the point where it's an eyesore.

Facebook is still Facebook.com. Facebook was not bought out by Netlog (as the other answerers have stated), but Facebox was bought out by Netlog. Facebox was a similar site primarily for European youths. Anyway, you should be able to check under Tools | Options which sites you have blocked. It's also possible that the site may be experiencing some difficulties at this time. Try signing in at a later time or caching the site off Google (search Facebook on Google and choose to display the link as a Cache - the option will be beneath the link).

Someone i knew had a party and my friends were going, but i didn't here about it, so i didn't go....following monday, the person asked why i wasn't there. I just figured they didn't want me there....but yeah...just too hard to tell EVERYONE. Facebook makes that easier. If you don't get the facebook party invite, you know not to show up.

Yeah. It's a university thing (which has spread to HS) in which students can post pics and things. It's really kinda dumb. I put a page up there because my friends pushed me to. I never use it. If anyone knows why, I, too would like to know. Restarting the computer makes no difference, and every other site on the web works fine. But, about 60,000 people here can't get it to work either.

u can send gifts add movies, music, and quizzes and possibly more than u can imagine....there r over 1,000 different applications u can add to ur profile...and it's a lot safer than myspace is...u can also make ur profile private if u want....it's a lot of fun and pretty much everyone has one now

It's a great way to keep in touch with friends from school when going off to college. You post pictures, send them messages, create groups, and can even schedule parties and invite people through Facebook. Just be careful not to put something that is too personal online.

1) Privacy-- You are suposed to only add people you know personally or assoicated with. Friends, classmates, co-workers, even aqquitences, etc. Which is why when you add someone they ask you how do you know this person? And the details are listed.
2) College Networks--A member has to use their college e-mail address to join a school network. You can't fake a college email adress. Either your in school or not lol. And if you don't have a registered college email address, then you can't join a college network. This keeps spam users out of the network. And makes it easy to connect with real people around campus.
3) Events---I can't tell you how many parties and events that I've been invited too via facebook. When something is going down on campus or someone is throwing a party. The host can list it on facebook and invite friends and other people from school to the event. It's an easy way to spread the word.
4)No screen names---User's must use their real name. You have to be yourself. Making a false account with a fake name and weird pictures would defeat the whole purpose of facebook. Unlike myspace people can be whoever they want...which is kind of creepy! But with facebook you are given the privacy to be yourself and add real friends, classmates, etc
5)Tagged pictures and videos! I love this feature. If someone uploads a picture that I am in. They can tag me in it. So it will show up under my pictures and my friends can also see the picture of me that was tagged. I can also see pictures of my friends that were not uploaded by them but tagged because they are in the picture.
Myspace recently added this feature...losers!
6) No layouts!----Like on myspace, there are users that have layouts, music players, a hundred graphics, videos,etc all on one page? Does this make sense? NO! Does this slow down the computer? YES! I hate going to pages like that. It takes forever for them to load and is a waste of time.

1) Privacy-- You are suposed to only add people you know personally or assoicated with. Friends, classmates, co-workers, even aqquitences, etc. Which is why when you add someone they ask you how do you know this person? And the details are listed.
2) College Networks--A member has to use their college e-mail address to join a school network. You can't fake a college email adress. Either your in school or not lol. And if you don't have a registered college email address, then you can't join a college network. This keeps spam users out of the network. And makes it easy to connect with real people around campus.
3) Events---I can't tell you how many parties and events that I've been invited too via facebook. When something is going down on campus or someone is throwing a party. The host can list it on facebook and invite friends and other people from school to the event. It's an easy way to spread the word.
4)No screen names---User's must use their real name. You have to be yourself. Making a false account with a fake name and weird pictures would defeat the whole purpose of facebook. Unlike myspace people can be whoever they want...which is kind of creepy! But with facebook you are given the privacy to be yourself and add real friends, classmates, etc
5)Tagged pictures and videos! I love this feature. If someone uploads a picture that I am in. They can tag me in it. So it will show up under my pictures and my friends can also see the picture of me that was tagged. I can also see pictures of my friends that were not uploaded by them but tagged because they are in the picture.
Myspace recently added this feature...losers!
6) No layouts!----Like on myspace, there are users that have layouts, music players, a hundred graphics, videos,etc all on one page? Does this make sense? NO! Does this slow down the computer? YES! I hate going to pages like that. It takes forever for them to load and is a waste of time.

There are also applications which you get used to right away. It is the easiest to navigate to other profiles and such. Reply:Facebook.com is better than other social websites for many reasons. Facebook does not submit your content to search engines. So lets say you comment about your teacher, and she googles her name, she will not be able to see what you wrote about her. On myspace she would be able to see everything just by doing a simple search in google. Facebook has many applications thatt are very fuun. Facebook is more suitable for younger people and there are less chances of becoming victimized.
Reply:In my opinion, it's not. Actually its a lot more than a little complicated than myspace (ie. all it's applications, profile-addons...etc). Myspace is for socializing in general/capturing your personality. Facebook is a wannabe version that just got really popular all of a sudden.

The facebook account doesn't belong to you it belongs to facebook and they have the right to disable it at their discretion. Did they not tell you why they disabled it? If they haven't email them and ask for an explanation or to restore it if they have done it in error.

Okay so somebody added a photo of me from their album...which is supposed to show up where it says "view more photos of me", but one of my friends went to that and the pictures didn't show up. It says there are 18 pictures of me but only 15 show up. They are others from another person's photo album. Can't other people see those pictures?

It might be because your friend has her privacy set too high for her pictures. She may have it set so only certain friends can see the album so others won't be able to see it.
Reply:It depends what network your freinds in I believe. If your freind is not in the network that has the picture posted, or the person that posted the picture has a limited profile set, I dont think your freind will be able to check out your pictures.
