I was wondering how social networks such as facebook.com make money? Websites such as youtube.com, and wikipedia.com also come to mind. There seems to be little to no advertising, and the amount, if any of advertising they have seems small, and oblique, making me assume revenue from these ads do not equate to the costs of operating such sites.
I understand youtube.com has not been a profitable company at all, at least until Google.com had purchased it. No word on how that will change it's revenue though.
Please let me know your thoughts.

You can't really modify facebook the way you can with myspace or friendster and wouldn't be able to use anything found on an outside site, you can however look through the facebook based applications and use them as you wish.

I want to block this site as my mom is addicted to facebook and tells me to get off the computer when I am doing homework and other important stuff. Take note of the s after http though, that's what makes it pretty much unblockable by school computer administrators. You could also get xB Browser, and put it on your flash drive, then run it from the computer you're working on. It uses its own proxies, but it's cool because you don't have to go to the proxy THEN your website, and it also doesn't block Java, meaning you can still watch YouTube, not like most proxies. It's also based on Firefox, which is my browser of choice.

So there should be an image that shows up, with some letter and numbers on it... you type those same letters and numbers into the box (usually with no spaces, even if there are spaces in the picture).

I had the same problem. The issue was with our version of Internet Explorer.

I just purchased a motorola rizr z3....I have tried troubleshooting with tmobile but that did not work. apparently because i am able to visit other sites from my phone, there is no issue with my actual phone. i can actually get to m.facebook.com or facebook.com from my phone but once i try to login with my email and password I get a message that says FETCH REDIRECTED URL it gives me the options of yes or no. after choosing yes the message just pops up. i can do this 4 or 5 times and then i will get the message PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED. also when i try to visit myspace.com i instantly get the PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED message without even being able to view the login page. any one else experience this? or know how to fix it? thanks!!

I'd give anyone my myspace, just dont put ur phone number on ur profile, and if u do then make ur profile private and only accept or send invites to people u know. Facebook is a little safer, u belong to a network and its basically just ur friends...

There are tons of great applications you can add to your pages which help to make it much more interactive between members. Reply:I use facebook cause it's an easy way to find kids in your school. They're adding more applications that u can add to ur profile to make it better, so its pretty good. I like myspace more... I'd give anyone my myspace, just dont put ur phone number on ur profile, and if u do then make ur profile private and only accept or send invites to people u know. Facebook is a little safer, u belong to a network and its basically just ur friends...

It is likely that your school is blocking access to the servers that host facebook. The user who suggested downloading Firefox onto a memory key, that will not work. No matter what browser you use, if the site is blocked at the edge of the network you'll be out of luck. The primary option you have is using an external proxy server, or one of the anonymous browsing services. You can google for them, and find one that works for you. Another option is connecting to your computer at home via Remote Desktop, and browsing via that computer. However it is likely that if your school network is locked down, they will also have blocked the RDP port (3389).

I just found out that Orlando Bloom has placed a profile on Facebook.com under a disguise in order to meet single women. How is going to do that if there are no personal ads on that site and you have to be invited or already have friends on there? I don't understand this site anyway.

Just to let you know, Orlando Bloom was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night(5/15/07) and he said so himself that he hasn't taken his new computer out of the box ,because he's terrified of it, and he doesn't even know what MySpace is. I would have to assume ,based on that fact, that if he doesn't know what MySpace is then he probably doesn't know what Facebook is either. More than likely the person you found on Facebook is just one of 100s of Orlando Bloom posers that are on the internet.

Just because the alert said that "Orlando Bloom" was going to be doing that doesn't mean that the "Orlando Bloom" that they're talking about is actually the real one. There are all kinds of people out there on the internet "claiming" to be celebrities and you can never be sure if you've actually found the real one or not.
Personally, I think ,even though the alert is telling you that "Orlando Bloom" is going to be doing something, the person you are being alerted about is a poser. I base that on the fact that Orlando said he hasn't taken his computer out of the box and doesn't know what MySpace is even though this is Facebook that we're talking about. It's up to you to use your best judgment and decide if you think the person is real or not.
